A regular home plumbing system has three basic parts: a water supply system, a fixture and appliance set of lines and a drain system.
1. Water Supply System
First, fresh water enters the home through a main supply line. Fresh water generally comes from one of the two resources; either a municipality or a private well. If a municipality supplies the water, there will be a meter between the avenue and the house. A typical family of four utilizes approximately four hundred gallons of fresh water everyday.
2. Fixtures and Appliances Set of Lines
Immediately after the main water supply line enters the house, it branches off to the water heater. From there, it runs parallel with cold water line plus brings water to fixtures and as well as appliances all through the house. Fixtures include sinks, bathtubs, showers plus laundry areas. Appliances include water heaters, clothes washers, dishwashers and water softeners. Faucets and valves regulate water supplies to fixtures plus appliances.
3. Drain System
After fresh water is utilized, waste water then enters the drain system. Waste water passes through a drain trap; a U-shaped pipe which holds standing water and averts sewer gases from entering the house. Every fixture in the house needs a trap. The drain system works with help of gravity allowing waste water to flow downhill through a chain of gradually increasing sets of pipes. The drain pipes are connected to a chain of vent pipes. The vent pipes provide fresh air to the drain system therefore preventing any problem that could impede or even prevent drain water from flowing freely; vent pipes can generally be witnessed exiting the house at a roof vent.
All waste water ultimately reaches a main waste line which curves to form a sewer line. The sewer line will exit your house very close to the foundation. In a municipal system the sewer line will connect to the main sewer line at the avenue. In rural regions where there is no waste system; waste water empties into a septic system.
