Before we give you our list of smell slayers, keep in mind that the best option is to avoid smelliness in the first place by cleaning your bathroom sink on a regular schedule. That said, here are some great ways to get rid of sink stink:
Check your sink’s anatomy.
There are a lot of places gunk and grime can get stuck in a sink other than just the pipes. A common culprit is the aerator cap, the small portion of metal around where you see water coming out of your faucet. Removal can be as simple as using pliers to spin it off. You can visually check and see if gunk has built up and remove it using an old toothbrush and a gentle hand.
Use a little science.
We recommend never using off the shelf chemical drain cleaners, because more often than not they cause more damage than they fix due to the harsh nature of the ingredients. However, if you want to try an at home mixture to attempt to get rid of your sink smells, try this simple mixture: one half cup salt, one half cup baking soda, and one cup vinegar. Pour them down the drain in order and then cover it for half a minute to let the bubbles work their magic. Pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain after that to clear things out and dissolve the salt and, if the problem is minor enough, clear away the stink.
Pick up the phone.
If the previous two suggestions haven’t helped with your sink smell, then it’s time to pick up the phone. If the smell you’re encountering is especially eggy, you could be dealing with sulfur. This is something you can have addressed by contacting your utility provider. If you use well water and are running into that same sulfuric smell, we recommend getting your water tested by a lab for safety’s sake. If the smell is something you wouldn’t describe as “rotten eggs”, then it’s likely you have build up in your pipes that simple measures just can’t address. Thankfully there are plenty of professional drain cleaning services out there to help you, your pipes, and your nose.
