- Flush each toilet. Make sure they flush properly by putting a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If the coloring begins to appear in the bowl, you have a leak. Adjust or replace the flush valve or call a plumber.
- Look for cracked tiles. Loose or hollow tiles can be an indication that there is, or was, a leak that has caused rotting underneath or behind the tile.
- Check pipes for corrosion. A sign of corrosion is green stains around brass or copper fittings and on shutoff valves, as well as yellow or orange stains on old steel pipes. Corrosion of pipes can cause serious leaks if left unnoticed.
