Earthquake Gas Shut-Off Valve

In Southern California, it's critical to have proper measures in place when an earthquake strikes. If your natural gas pipe is damaged, it could lead to potentially deadly consequences.

Earthquake shut-off valves are installed to automatically shut off your natural gas service. Don't risk the possible hazards leaking gas could cause; take action to protect your family and your home.

What Are Earthquake Shut-off Valves?

Seismic activity can quickly disrupt your home’s foundation. When an earthquake strikes and causes damage to pipes, it’s critical to restrict the flow of natural gas in order to prevent damage to your Southern California home and your health. Earthquake shut-off valves are installed to automatically shut off your natural gas service. Two common specialized valves include:

  • Seismic Natural Gas Shut-Off Valve: When an earthquake of a sufficient is detected, the valve will shut off your natural gas service.
  • Excess-Flow Valve: The earthquake shut-off valve will shut off your natural gas service when a significant leak or overpressure surge occurs at a pipe, or where an appliance is located beyond the location of the valve installation.

Why Should I Install an Earthquake Shut-Off Valve?

  • In the event of a seismic earthquake of 5.1 or higher, your earthquake shut-off valve closes the gas line even when you are not home.
  • A shut-off valve will save your home from fires and damages when resources are most strained during an earthquake.
  • The valves are very soon to be a required update on all homes.
  • A natural gas leak means a dangerous and potentially deadly situation. Without an earthquake shut-off valve, make sure you know how to recognize and respond.

Ask your Technician about a Free Visual Safety Inspection!

Under the regulations of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), General Order 112-E, only SoCalGas or its certified contractors are authorized to operate the gas service shut-off valve. With our safety check, a Technician will check over 22 areas throughout your home. This inspection will ensure that your home is prepared when Mother Nature decides to shake things up!
